Camisoles
and Shorts A camisole or cami is a woman's undergarment which covers the top part of the body. It is sleeveless and tight fitting in contrast to a loose-fitting chemise. A camisole is sometimes worn cropped allowing midriff exposure, but often covers the entire torso and are manufactured from satin or silk, or stretch materials such as lycra, though cotton based materials are more common. A camisole can be worn over a bra or without one. Some camisoles come with a built-in underwire bra which eliminates the need for a bra among those who prefer one. Recently, camisoles have been known to be used as outerwear. An alternative to the camisole (although very similar) is the vest and these are normally tight fitting, made from cotton and can come with printed logos and patterns. Whether you opt for a camisole or vest is entirely down to personal preference. Both camisole and vest can be worn with either matching or contrasting shorts. These are sold separately or sometimes as cami sets. |

Chemises
and Nightdresses The chemise was developed from the Roman tunica and first became popular in the European Middle Ageswhere women wore shifts or chemises underneath their gowns or robes. A chemise (used to be known as a shift or smock) was usually sewn at home, by the women of a household. It was assembled from rectangles and triangles cut from one piece of cloth so as to leave no waste. The poor would wear skimpy chemises pieced from a narrow piece of rough cloth; the rich had voluminous chemises pieced from thin, smooth fine linen. Nowadays the chemise is a loose-fitting, sleeveless, shirt-like undergarment or piece of lingerie made from delicate sheer material such as satin and silk and usually provocative. A nightdress is a loosely hanging item of nightwear and is normally quite dressy. Its length may vary from hip-length (babydoll) to floor-length (negligee) but is typically knee-length. A nightdress is manufactured of cotton, silk or satin. A short nightdress is often called nightie. A slip nightdress may be used as a nightdress or as a full slip. Worn often with a matching outer garment, a robe, sheer chiffon peignoir or dressing gown. Less dressy then nightdresses are nightshirts. |

Pyjamas The original pyjamas were loose, lightweight drawstring trousers tied around the waist and worn in South and West Asia. The loose, two-piece garment derived from the original garment, is worn as sleepwear. Pyjamas in this sense consist of a jacket and trouser combination, made of a lightweight non-stretch material, similar to materials used in bed sheets, with the jacket closing down the front with buttons. These first appeared in Britain as a result of British colonial presence in South Asia in the 18th and 19th centuries. Made predominantly of soft cotton (and cotton like) materials they make great sleepwear and double nicely as lounge wear for lazy Sundays (when you really can't be bothered to actually get dressed - yes we all have them!). Normally sold individually so you can mix Pants with cami tops and shirts or available as pyjama sets - the choice is entirely yours. |
