Daytime dresses Beginning around 1915, hemlines for daytime dresses left the floor. For the next fifty years, fashionable dresses became short (1920s), then long (1930s), then shorter (the War Years with their restrictions on fabric), then long (the New Look), then shortest of all during the 1960s, when dresses became as short as possible while avoiding exposure of underwear. Since the 1970s and the rise of trousers/pants as an option for all but the most formal of occasions, no one dress length has dominated fashion for long, with short and ankle-length styles often appearing side-by-side in fashion magazines and catalogues. In the summer dresses are cooler and less confining than many trouser styles, and they are still very popular for special occasions such as proms or weddings. The choice of daytime dress comes down to personal preference, you could opt for a printed dress or a shirt dress. For a more youthful appearance we would recommend a jersey dress or wrap dress with or without contrasting leggings. |

Evening Dresses Long evening dresses are otherwise known as ball gowns and are long, often loose, flowing dresses. It is a type of dress, ranging in length from ballerina to full-length and are made of a luxury fabrics such as velvet, satin, or silk. These evening dresses are normally worn to formal and semi formal black-tie events. It doesn't have to be a long full-length dress these days as shorter cocktail dresses are perfectly acceptable and during the summer preferable. Essential to the wardrobe, a well known fashion rule and a definite a must-have that is a 'little black dress' or LBD such as this one (popularized in the 1920s by the fashion designer Coco Chanel) which can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Evening Dresses are far more detailed than daytime dresses and are often embellished with pleats, ruches, belts or Diamantes A fresh and fashionable alternative to the LBD is the playsuit. |
